It is one switch in settings. After that, dragging works the same way it does for posts, and you can point the archive at that order.
Enable the post type
- Go to Settings → Reorder Posts. You need an Administrator account
- On Enable Post Types, switch the type on
- Save
- The row grows a Reorder link. The type’s own menu also gets a Reorder submenu, when it has a menu
The type has to be visible to wp-admin (show_ui). Attachments are skipped. A type with no top-level menu, or one that is not public, still gets the Reorder link on this settings row. That link is how you open it. The submenu is registered without a parent menu, so it will not clutter the sidebar.
Drag, then point the archive at menu order
Hierarchical types nest the same way Reorder pages describes. Flat types are a single list, like posts. The public archive does not follow the drag until you tell it to. A Query Loop on a template, a few lines in pre_get_posts, or Advanced for that type. The steps are on Show the saved order on the front end.
If you would rather lock the list in code than click the toggles, Hooks shows metronet_reorder_post_types.
