Reorder PostsHow-To Guides

Reorder a long list

Problem Statement

I cannot find the post. This screen has no search.

On a long list, that search box is easy to mistrust. It only looks through the rows already on this page, so a post you know is published can sit a screen or two down and never turn up.

Roots and Fruit

You can pull more rows onto one page, and you can walk a post across the page break so it lands with the neighbors you wanted.

Show more rows

  1. Open the reorder screen for that post type
  2. Open Screen Options at the top right
  3. Set Items per Page. The default is 50. That number is saved for your user, not for the whole site
  4. Click Apply

I raise it when I am looking for one title and I know it is published. I put it back when the drag starts to feel heavy. At 1,000 published items the screen warns you. The plugin will still load, and sorting that many rows is the wrong tool. Split the content, or order a smaller set.

Move a post across a page break

Pages overlap on purpose. Each page after the first starts two items earlier than a hard cut would. Those two repeated posts are the bridge. Drag relative to them, go to the next page, and the post you moved should sit with its new neighbors.

The last page can look short because of that overlap. The posts are not missing. If you need something from the end of the list at the top, walk it page by page, or raise Items per Page until the posts you care about share a screen.

Hierarchical lists

Child pages load under their parent, up to 100. They are not a separate page of the top-level pager. Expand the arrow, drag inside that branch, or drag out of it to change the parent. A parent with more than 100 published children will not show the rest under it. Narrow that family, or edit the parent on the page itself, before you try to drag the overflow.

Saving still happens as you drop. On a long list the plugin writes the new numbers in batches, so give it a moment before you click to another page.
